Substitution Tips for Junior Basketball
For junior community-level basketball, prioritize improving on-court play rather than focusing on complex substitution strategies. Junior players need to master the basics, as building foundational skills early leads to stronger team performance overall. Ensuring equal playing time allows every player the opportunity to improve their game and fosters a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment in the sport.
1. Pre-Plan and Print Substitution Schedules
Organizing your substitution schedule before the game is crucial as it allows you to stay really focused on the gameplay. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking way too much about substitutions and not enough about game strategy and individual or team improvement.

2. Consider Player Abilities When Planning Substitutions
Organize subs based on player strengths. For example, don’t sub out your two top scorers simultaneously if possible. Similarly, stagger substitutions for ball handlers or tall players to maintain balance on the court. This is absolutely critical to a teams success.
3. Engage Players During Bench Time
Use time on the bench to communicate with players. It’s hard for them to absorb instructions in the intensity of gameplay, but on the bench, they can better process feedback and adjust based on the game’s dynamics.
4. Tell Players What's Happening
Junior players really appreciate fair and equal playing time. I even like to display the sub schedule on the floor in-front of the bench so players can see when and for how long they are back on court. They can then judge for themselves how hard to run knowing when the next substitution might happen.
5. Be Flexible
A player might get into foul trouble, injured or might simply need a rest. I like to have a printed substitution schedule and a pen so I can more easily make adjustments for when the plan doesn't go to plan!
Following these tips will help your junior team build strong, foundational skills while ensuring substitutions run smoothly and fairly.
