The EqualSubs netball substitution calculator builds a fair, quarter-by-quarter rotation for your squad — respecting each player's preferred positions and remembering who sat out last game so bench time evens out across the season. Here's how to get the most out of it.

1. Add Your Players

Type each player's name into the Add a Player box and click Add Player. You need at least 7 players marked as playing to fill every on-court position — anyone beyond 7 rotates through the bench across the four quarters. Remove a player at any time with the trash icon next to their name.

2. Set Preferred Positions (Optional)

For each player you can tick a primary and secondary preferred position — GS, GA, WA, C, WD, GD or GK. When a player has preferences set, the calculator only places them in those positions (falling back gracefully if the squad size makes that impossible). This is entirely optional: if you'd rather every player got equal experience across every position over time, just leave everyone's positions unselected and the tool will rotate them through the full range instead.

3. Calculate Your Rotation

Click Calculate Substitutions to generate a complete 4-quarter plan — who plays where each quarter, and who's on the bench. The plan is only a preview at this point; nothing is saved until you lock it in.

4. Shuffle or Manually Edit

Not quite right? Click Shuffle to generate a different valid plan without changing any of your settings. Or click Edit on any quarter to manually swap two players — select one, then select another in the same quarter to swap their spots. Both keep everything else in the plan intact.

5. Lock In to Save the Game

Once you're happy with the plan, click Lock In. This is the only action that actually saves anything — calculating and shuffling are just previews. Locking in saves the game to your Game History and updates each player's record of what they played and when they last sat out, so future rotations stay fair across the whole season. Pressing Shuffle or Calculate again afterwards clears the lock so you can start a fresh plan. Saved a rotation by mistake? Simply delete that game in the Game History section.

6. Save Your Team

Create a free account (or log in) to save your team roster and preferred positions between visits, so you don't have to re-enter your squad before every game. It also unlocks Game History and Lock In, since both need to know which coach the games belong to.

7. Print Your Substitution Plan

Click Print Substitution Plan for a printer-friendly version of the quarter-by- quarter lineup to bring courtside on game day.
